# Calculating Throughput Yield or Yield

I have a problem understanding exactly how to calculate throughput yield.

Here is an example:

Throughput yield = e -dpu (the -dpu would be in the upper rt hand corner)

answer: Throughput yield = e -0.004125 = 0.996

A word document is attached that shows a better representation of what I am trying to convey. It is form the ASQ CSSB book

I would appreciate help in understanding how to correctly calculate.

I'm not sure what your question is. You have a correct formula and you did the math correctly.

(In this example I assume your defect rate is .004125)

Hello Bev D,
My question is on how to get the anwser. I was reading the ASQ CSSB Book and this is where the information and attachment came from.

My question is on knowing how to take this: e -dpu
to this = e -0.004125 = 0.996.

I may be over analyzing this.

Thanks I'm not sure of what you mean by the steps to getting to the end result. Is it the math or the basic concept? See if either this or this answers your question.

I think I get it:
e is a number like pi
e = 2.71828
teh math works by raising e to the power of -dpu.
so instead of 2^2 which is 2 squared you have
2.71828^-0.004125 = .996
in excel you can use the formula EXP(-dpu) adn will do this quickly for you. most scientific calculators will also do this

on the other hand maybe I've got it wrong: are you questionign why this formula works to calculate Yield?
