Calibrating Digital Pressure Gages In-House

Hello everyone! I have a question about calibrating digital single pressure gages in our facility. We have found a hand pump by Dwyer that will give us the pressure we need, but I am wondering about the gage that will be used as the "master". Can it have the same accuracy (?0.25% of full scale) as the gage that is being tested, or will I need to get a gage to use as the master with a better accuracy (?0.05% of full scale)?

We are planning to have the "master" sent out annually to be calibrated, and then do our in-house gages quarterly.

Thanks for the help!!~!

You might be better off purchasing a calibration system. But most calibration master gauges have an accuracy of ? of 1% full scale. Calibration fluid is nitrogen, (yes the gas is call a fluid in gauge calibration) usually using a calibration rig made up of a pressure regulator, master gauge and a volumetric controller.

I need to post links to the equipment we are considering but I cannot yet. Please excuse the multiple posts that I am about to make.

We have several pressure gages in house, and we are looking for a way to calibrate most of them ourselves to make a huge cost savings.

If we can find the right equipment, we can have one pressure gage and one vacuum gage calibrated annually, then check our internal gages on a quarterly basis.

This will allow us to do more check of the testing equipment, and save money and time in the long run.

We found our potential equipment on the Dwyer website, since we primarily use their brand of gages in our testing.

And the following post will finally detail our train of thought.

Once again, sorry for the multiple posts to get the post count up so I can do links.

If I am thinking correctly, we will be using a calibration system. Here is the setup we were thinking of.

The gages we use for our production testing are these in the 0.25% FS accuracy:
www.dwyer-inst.com/Product/Pressure/SinglePressure/Gages-Digital/SeriesDPG

The pump we found that we believe will work for calibration is this one:
www.dwyer-inst.com/Product/TestEquipment/CalibrationPumps/ModelHP

Using the proper tubes you connect the unit you are testing to one side, the calibrated master to the other, and then get the pressure from the pump that you are looking for and compare the two readouts.

The gage we looked at initial to use for calibration is this one:
www.dwyer-inst.com/Product/Pressure/SinglePressure/Gages-Digital/SeriesDCGII

But I am thinking we can use the regular DPG series just like we use for testing instead of the second option. I can get the DPG series we use in pressure and vacuum so that I can do both types in house, but the DCGII only comes in pressure, and is about $800 more expensive for a single unit.

Advice? Thanks!!

Performing a 1:1 calibration check is not recommended. At a minimum, a 4:1 ratio is recommended. Ratio's less than 4:1 can be "guardband" to compensate for ratio's less than 4:1.

If your gauge is 0-100 psi with a accuracy of ?0.25% of full scale, the accuracy of the gauge would be 0.25 psi. To maintain the 4:1 ratio, the standard needs to have a maximum error of 0.0625 psi (0.25/4).
