Calibration for another company

Starting to get Involved
Hi All,

For years i have been responsible for internal calibration of all manual measuring devices, like calipers, micrometers, outside micrometers etc.
All against their respective standards, calibrated through a certified company ofcourse, so all is traceable against their (inter) national standards.
Also for monitoring external calibrations, for standards, thread gauges etc.

Now i have been asked by another company to perform calibrations of their devices. As you understand that i am not official accredited or a lab for calibration.
Capability of me can be proven by training certificates and experience.

Now is the question, apart from how i can set this up the best for their company, will their be a dificulty against the ISO9001 standards?
They, and we, are 9001-2015 certified.

Here is the excerpt of the ISO requirements:

7.1.5 Monitoring and measuring resources
7.1.5.1 General
The organization shall determine and provide the resources needed to ensure valid and reliable
results when monitoring or measuring is used to verify the conformity of products and services to
requirements.

The organization shall ensure that the resources provided:
a) are suitable for the specific type of monitoring and measurement activities being undertaken;
b) are maintained to ensure their continuing fitness for their purpose.
The organization shall retain appropriate documented information as evidence of fitness for purpose of
the monitoring and measurement resources.

7.1.5.2 Measurement traceability
When measurement traceability is a requirement, or is considered by the organization to be an essential
part of providing confidence in the validity of measurement results, measuring equipment shall be:
a) calibrated or verified, or both, at specified intervals, or prior to use, against measurement standards
traceable to international or national measurement standards; when no such standards exist, the
basis used for calibration or verification shall be retained as documented information;
b) identified in order to determine their status;
c) safeguarded from adjustments, damage or deterioration that would invalidate the calibration
status and subsequent measurement results.
The organization shall determine if the validity of previous measurement results has been adversely
affected when measuring equipment is found to be unfit for its intended purpose, and shall take
appropriate action as necessary.

Ofcoure there is more, regarding knowledge and document control, But i think that i have that under control
Never had a NC when being audited about calibration.

Only difficulty, i think at this moment, is for their company, to have the correct information available and for me
to supply this information.
Would it be best to be hired to get to their plant and setup a system there, or just have them send the devices to me?

Also, is it worth to get into this effort, or are there to many strings attached.

Important of course, my current management has agreed to discuss this, so it is no secret.

Any advise herein would be much appreciated.

JanKees,

I would insist the relevant stakeholders at the other company visit you to see your laboratory and discuss how best to move forward.

Do you have the spare capacity? Are you competent to calibrate all the equipment they require?

My opinion is that it's a very odd that they are not looking for an accredited external provider or to calibrate internally.

I have allready asked them to visit so they can see what i have, and perhaps to discuss what they want and how they see it for the future.
We have the capacity, and yes, i have the competency.
But i am not saying yes inmediately.

There is a accredited company in the neighbourhood, but they have taken over many calibration company's the last couple of years, so there is not much competition for comparison left. Or they are pretty far away, which could lead to difficulty's regarding leadtime, transport etc.

And, in my opinion, it is always good to look for different options.

What exactly is the problem? You can either calibrate for them or not? Are you using their stuff? Or your current company’s resources?
