"Calibration Not Required" label requirements

Hello,

Could you give me some examples of justification?

Thank you! :)
Calibration Not Required could be for an instrument that

  1. does not require calibration, like clocks for display purpose only or
  2. an instrument that requires calibration but due to its application (not for measurement), calibration is not required. This could be for the innumerable dial guages on the Utility systems
  3. self calibrating instruments, eg. FTIR Spectrophotometers
  4. patended pre-calibrated instruments - this is for spirometers

These are just few examples for justification.

We have Master blocks sets that are calibrated regularly, but we also have "reference only" pins and blocks. How about these?

Thank you!

Sorry, I do not know about the Master Block and pins. Btw, does that fit any of the categories that I mentioned earlier ?

If they were made "For Reference Only" because the job they used them for is now obsolete and they did not want to maintain calibration on them to save costs, then that would be OK. But, they will need calibration again if they are used for qualifying product in the future.

If they are verified by a calibrated instrument (mic, etc.) before use, does one still have to have the pins/blocks calibrated?

Thank you!

Yes, if it is being used for product or process verification. And it has to be calibrated with an appropriate piece of equipment for the gage tolerance (such as 4:1 to 10:1 resolution to the gage tolerance being calibrated), reviewed for any damage (burrs, etc.), and documented. Verification is handy if you tend to mix up pins, and need to make sure you have the correct one, or if you have little calibration history, and want to track the gage condition more closely.

Hi everyone,

I have a quick question about calibration labels.

In our surveillance audit, we received a "Sensitive Point" indicating:
"Some test equipments are not calibrated and not identified as 'calibration not required'".

Are there any standard/official formats for the "Calibration Not Required" labels? Must I purchase these labels from a company who makes them or may I use say a standard white mailing label and print out my own "Calibration Not Required" label?

Thanks!

I believe your auditor got it wrong.
Test Equipment does not require calibration? If you make a decision based on the results of that equipment - then calibration IS required. (the extent of calibration is up to you to justify).

If you put labels on gauges to indicate their calibration status - and some don't have labels due to your scenario that its not required - then consider NOT having any labels on the gauges at all ! Control your gauges via gauge serial number from a central data base and the problem goes away.

Don't let anybody tell you that this is not possible (or the most efficient method) In my experience 80% of modern organizations no longer use the (very) old fashioned management tool of applying labels to gauges.

A couple of questions:
1) could they be calibrated by us or do we need an accredited lab?
2) how long can the calibration intervals be for commonly used plug gages, pins, blocks, etc.?

Thank you again!

How long is a piece of string?

There are so many variables. What is required is competence in the Calibration of Equipment. Have you considered outsourcing your calibration function? Not jsut Calibration - but the calibration Process!
