Calibration of a Dial Indicator only used to indicate 0

I have several height gages, which are sent out for calibration annually.
Some are simply used with the scribe that come with it, others are used with a dial indicator to indicate "0".

Since the indicator is only used to indicate 0, and is not used for the measurement per se, do I really need to get the indicator calibrated?

:thanx:

Re: dial indicator

The fast answer is Yes. Does the indicator repeat going to 0.

The long answer is: Depends on usage and procedure. If the indicator is used as part of the measurement, how do you know it repeats, does not stick or give false readings. You could limit the 'use' of the device so that it is only for .000 to .000 repeats, but I believe you still need verification that it repeats.

Re: dial indicator

If you are using the height gage to measure any variation from "0" which I think that you would be, then you need to calibrate the gage. If you have calibrated gage blocks, you should be able to do this yourself rather than sending them out.

We don't know what standard (ISO 9001, e.g.) is involved here, nor do we know enough about how the indicator is used to be able to give firm advice.

If it's ISO 9001 or ISO/TS 16949, calibration (in accordance with the requirements in the standards) is required "when necessary to ensure valid results." This means that if calibration isn't necessary to ensure valid results, calibration isn't required. What's prudent in the OP's situation is a different story.

Indicating 0 also is measuring 0, and your use is that it measures 0 at many places for your next decision. Instead of 0 it can also be say 2.00, and you will be interested to read 2.00 each time.
There is a measurement and so is a need for calibration ...
