An auditor might ask for verification of proper operation of the device. Doing a periodic calibration check to design specification limits and logging measurements using a device traceable to NIST would provide such objective evidence.

Calibration of tooling isn't calibration, if you use the definition correctly - what you are actually doing is, again, verification. Since you are not factoring the uncertainty of measurement (which is probably not a factor, anyway)...
