Re: calibration - toolroom equipment

Hi all..and thanks for your responses. I would like to add a comment if I may regarding the intent of the standard.

My original reason for the post was to clarify what the general thoughts are, (and thank you for all yours).

Like most manufacturing company's these days we are all faced with ever rising costs, and pressures for cost down. We have been operating for many decades, and have never had any failures associated with a toolmakers instrument being out of calibration, and we have had a significant quantity of equipment to calibrate that in turn would have a major cost associated with it for no benefit.

I prefer the idea of having a set of selected instruments specifically for this use.

Thanks again for your time in responding

Re: Callibration of Tool Room Equipment

Hmmm, each time I post I feel like a money grubbing capitalist:confused:

Cash in my pocket. Calibration costs money.

The real question is not what are the benefits one way or the other, but whether the cost is higher one way or the other.

Which costs less:
A) Calibrating the tools on a regular basis.
B) Ensuring that a non-calibrated tool is never used for acceptance testing.

Either of these approaches fit the bill for the quality system...which one makes the most financial sense?

Important note: Don't miss the word "Ensure" in option B. Believing that it's OK isn't good enough. How are you making SURE they aren't being used for acceptance testing...that's where option B might actually become more expensive.

As is hinted to with the "Ensure" statement. What is the cost of error, waste, variation, making a part or tool bad the first time? Why use a non calibrated tool during fabrication just to have final inspection of the tool or part say, "nope this is wrong - do over"? What impact does this have on the customer, (internal or external) the skilled tradesman etc? All of this from using an incorrect gage? How do you capture all of the potential costs? As Deming made famous, "the most important figures one needs for management are unknown or unknowable". For me, it comes to knowing that what I am measuring is real. The potential damages do out weigh the cost expenditure of calibration.

I would focus the conversation more in the arena of are other, less costly means of calibration possible? Do some but not all of these gages need to be calibrated because that feature is tied to or connected to some other measurement taken with calibrated instrument during fabrication.

:agree1::applause:

And then in your case, maybe more management of the calibration system may be in order. Possibly the intervals can be extended and such.

It's always tempting for companies to look at the calibration program as an expendable program. However, there sure are a lot of benefits gained with properly calibrated equipment. That said, there are ways to manage the calibration program to assure that costs are minimal; while still receiving maximum value.:)

Agree.
You just said it in far less words than I. You've highlighted that some gages may not need to be calibrated at all. The focus should be on "What is valuable?" There is indeed value in avoiding nasty potential things.

ISO 9001:2000 Interpretation Reference RFI – 028
ISO/TC 176 N757

Request: ISO 9001:2000 Clause 7.6
Is it correct that Clause 7.6 requires only the measuring and monitoring devices utilized by
persons responsible for release of the product to be calibrated or verified?
Background: The Client understands that all of the workers need to have all measuring devices
calibrated or verified. The contract just requires compliance with ISO 9001:2000 in this case.

Interpretation: NO
Rationale: Clause 7.6 requires calibration or verification of measuring equipment “where
necessary to ensure valid results”. It could be more than measuring equipment for product
release only (i.e.: verification of purchased products; in process inspection, etc.) but does not
necessarily mean all measuring equipment. When the organization determines the monitoring
and measuring required (as defined e.g. in clauses 4.1 a); 4.1 e); 7.1 c) and the first paragraph of
7.6), it shall decide which of them require calibration or verification of the measuring equipment
because of the requirement of “valid results”.

In our case, we do calibration of all toolroom equipments. But we have defined a specific acceptance criteria for tool room equipments. Acceptance criteria for equipments used in product measurement will be tight, whereas for tool room equipments, its bit relaxed.

I feel the logic is right. May be, our cove members can comment whether the system we follow is right or not??
