Good morning my friends....

I am really confused and i want some help from your experts...

I want to make a calibration for a load cell but it is found in universal testing machine by a comparison method....but some problems face me:

1-I don't have the suitable standard method for this kind of calibration..

2-This load cell reach to 5000 N for calibration... it isn't reasonable to hang 500 KG for this calibration,so:what will be the compensation for these loads...i heared about "Tensile Coupling"but i don't have enough info. about it....

Please help me....

Best regards...

When I used to run a physical test laboratory I used calibrated weights (to traceable standards – in the UK to UKAS or NAMAS certification) to do a weekly test on my Instron Universal Tensile Tester. I had interchangeable load cells, so I had a series of weights which I hung from the particular cell – 50, 500, 1000N and so on. I had the cells also tested every 6 months by a test house. An engineer came in and basically did exactly the same thing and issued a certificate.

By the way your 500kg weight should register 4903.325N on the machine.

I hope this helps.

For a suitable method that doubles as a procedure, I would use ASTM E 4.

You can acquire it at www.astm.org and in the search box type in e4

The newest edition I believe has both metric and non-metric.

This will describe calibration of the UTM with the load cell installed.

You will need a load cell to calibrate the installed cell, and it should be calibrated using ASTM E 74.

You will need to use calibrated master cells and associated electronic displays for larger forces.

Most testing machines suppliers can offer a calibration service and can adjust the system to meet the accuracies specified in the Standards if that is required.

I think the most common calibration standard is ISO 7500 which allows calibration to Class 0.5. If you would like more information please contact me.

David and Stiljoor have given good information. You might look to see if Egypt has adopted the ISO document, as many of the Egyptian Standards are either ISO or BS documents, and so it may already be there as an Egyptian document also.

The correct Standard for Universal Testing Machines is ISO 7500-1:2004 as the ISO 7500-2:2006 Standard is for creep testing machines.

The BS (British Standard) was BS1610 and I think that this was superceded by the ISO some years ago.

Just a quick point, here. Make sure you test your equipment within the range that you use it. If you test below your use range, you could run into problems.

You can also pull off the cells, turn them on its back, and place the weights on top of them.

I think this is not correct advice: first we are talking about 500kg! (think about safety), and second you are then subjecting the load cell to compressive force. The Original Poster talked about "hanging weights" therefore I assume she wants to calibrate in tension. In certain circumstances there can be some differences between calibration in tension and compression using the advice you gave.

Thank you! I appreciate you correcting that train of thought. I was thinking primarily about force, not tension. You are correct.:agree1:

I have (and do) verify force cells with the manner that I prescribed; however, it does not work for tension.:D

I have seen test rigs, though, for such tests. They take the cell out and place in a frame. The frame has a platform on it. They load the pallet and weight on it to test.

Your caution about safety is a good one, though. I would be tempted to call in a competent lab for this.

I've just got burned so many times by not testing devices in the true range of use (reduced max loads).
