Calibration of Load Cells in devices by a comparison method

I've just got burned so many times by not testing devices in the true range of use (reduced max loads).
Exactly. Many labs are ignorant of the fact - or do not check - that the ISO and ASTM Standards specify that the load cell is only calibrated from 100% down to (typically 20%) of its capacity. For many tests this range is not sufficient. For example measuring Youngs Modulus on materials with high Ultimate strength may mean that the modulus points are read from a part of the load cell range below the official lower limit of calibration. Most leading testing machine manufacturers offer calibration down to values such as 0.2% of cell capacity, or even lower - but I am not sure if third party calibration companies just follow the Standards.

Easiest solution is to hire an external (accredited) calibration lab to come in and perform the ASTM E4 certification. They have to use reference standards calibrated in accordance w/ ASTM E74.
If you follow the ASTM E4 standard for certification of your device, it requires that it be done at least every 18 months.

well, thanks for all of you Friends....

By the way,a friend advised me for using a "shaft" with a "Nut" ......:biglaugh:

Its mechanism is to be joined with a terminal on the load cell (from up)

and be joined with a ring in the bottom part of the device, then we can

increase the tension by rotating the nut causing a tension on the load

cell.....

Can anybody inform me if this device exist or not ???

Thanks Friends for your consults:applause:
Best Regards...

I think this is not correct advice: first we are talking about 500kg! (think about safety), and second you are then subjecting the load cell to compressive force. The Original Poster talked about "hanging weights" therefore I assume she wants to calibrate in tension. In certain circumstances there can be some differences between calibration in tension and compression using the advice you gave.

You are correct you are know testing compression not tension, if the cell is used in both tension and compression it should be calibrated both ways
