Z class pin gages are not the only class of gages in use on shop floor in many companies. Just like gage blocks they come various tolerances such as:

Class XX .00002" (twenty millionths)
Class X .00004" (forty millionths)
Class Y .00007" (seventy millionths)
Class Z .0001" (one tenth)

As I said in my first posting calibration was based on using a super mic or bench mic which may have been applicable for the company I then worked for based on the class of the pin gage they were using. In any case you need to determine the method of calibration of these gages bases on requirements and the basic fundamentals of dimensional metrology.

Re: as9100 and calibration.

The mics are mitutoyo mics model 293-330 right on mitutoyo's web site they state the accuracy is .00005.
Thanks

Nope accuracy is what is says on there website.

I checked it out. Since it's a 'marketing' website, I stay with my comment; maybe they say 'accuracy', when they mean 'resolution'. The micrometers shown resolve down to .00005. If they were really quoting accuracy, they'd have to report uncertainty..........

Their accuracy may be .00005 but since their resolution is also .00005 you'll never know. Their actual resoluton is .0001 since the 5 in the next decimal place is either 5 or 0 designation on these digital models.

...and that could be a problem when calibrating a pin gauge!

Re: AS9100 Calibration Requirements - Calibration of Pin Gages

One point to remember about clause 7.6 is just because you say verification in place of calibration does not lessen the requirements contained within this clause. You must have the necessary calibration or verifications masters to detect that a Mic, Caliper, plug gage etc are either within the required accuracy or not when you perform the verification and that this process must be controlled conforming to all requirements of the clause.

ISO 9000:2005 (normative reference per AS9100b Section 2 & 3) defines verification as “confirmation, through the provision of objective evidence, that specified requirements have been fulfilled”. If the organization describes the processes in a documented procedure that reference one of the many calibration standards like MIL-STD-45662, ISO 10012, ISO 17025 or Z540 your calibration/verification process must also meet the requirements contained within the sited reference in addition to AS9100.

In summary your calibration or verification system for M&MD’s must meet the requirements of AS9100, customer imposed contractual requirements and the organizations own internal operational procedures.

PS. Yes I know that MIL-STD-45662 has been canceled but it still shows up as a contractual requirement in many government POs
Just as a point of interest too, MIL-STD-45662 defines calibration, not verification, as "comparison of M&TE or measurement standard of unknown accuracy to a measurement standard of known accuracy in order to detect, correlalate (sic.) report, or eliminate by adjustment any variation in the accuracy of the instrument being compared" So by that standard, what you're doing is in fact calibration. I'm not as familiar with other standards, so take it with a grain of salt. :2cents:
