Calibration requirements for New Gages

I would like to get some opinions on if others have new gages calibrated before using them. Is it required? I would think if you are buying gages from a good manufacturer such as Starret that anything they ship new has been calibrated/verified to NIST standards.

Of course, it all depends on your quality system requirements. In our lab, all new gages must be certified by an ISO17025 accredited vendor before being put in to use. After the vendor sends the gage back, it was my job to verify the certification based on in house standard comparison. Always seemed like overkill to me, but it satisfied our A2LA auditors

I also calibrate new gages upon receipt. It is part of our procedure when entering a new piece of equipment.

I have received a bad gage once (that I can remember) from Mitutoyo. An ID digital groove caliper. I put it to a calibrated ring gage and was checking repeatably. It would not repeat. After looking into to it a bit, I sent the gage back and got a new one. The new one works just fine. I do not know what was wrong with the gage as I never really looked into it but I did have one gage that I received in 'good' that was not.

To your original question, the fact that a device leaves the manufacturer in tolerance doesn't mean that it will arrive at your location in that condition. Others may do differently, but I always calibrate the new stuff.

Same with me. Mainly, because the original calibration certificate is old, or is some kind of certificate of conformance (not a calibration certificate).

A calibration is valid at the time of calibration. Once it leaves the lab or enters the shipping dock/carrier/sorting/delivery/receiving dock system (lord knows how that chain performs) the condition is, in a sense, unknown. One may have a reasonable expectation that the equipment will arrive in good shape, but without at least a verification/conformance warm fuzzy, you're just hoping all is well with no knowledge of it.

dgriffith is correct. It should be noted that many manufacturers run checks at the end of the line and not necessarily a calibration. Hence, it is best to calibrate before putting into service so that you can have a level of confidence in the item.

Since someone already linked my posting about new gage manufacturers, I'll add my $0.02 and say yes. Have your new gages checked before using.

Just because they say it's good doesn't mean it's good.
