Calibration Stickers or Other Methods of Identifying when Gages are Due?

Hi, I'm watching this thread with great interest. I work in a company making High Speed drill bits, there is a lot of oil mist in the air and most thing get covered in hydraulic oil within minutes of going onto the shop floor. We currently have about 500 pieces of measuring equipment inc, micrometers and digital calipers. I use our own Access database to control the calibration frequency and keep records, what i need is a way of getting the operator to identify when a piece of equipment is ready for calibration. I currently go to each area on a rolling six monthly basis and calibrate as a matter of course however, when we have guests there is no way of showing that the piece has been calibrated, apart from taking them to the database, and the operator does not know when its due either. We've tried stickers but the oil peels it off, same with colour coding paint.

Hello, we use gagetrak database to track our 5600 assets and it works very well. As far as stickers that will withstand the oil mist, have you checked the product supplied by the Q-Cee label company, they have label that come with a laminate cover that work great for me, even though we do not have the oil mist that you discribed. Also if we have a gauge or piece of equipment that will not hold a label or is too small then we will attach the label to it's storage container. Hope this helps Bruce R.

Hello Andy - this is Andy! (a Brit, too!)

You could do worse than put up a 'board' or something similar, which lists the items used at each machine/workstation/cell (usually this type of measuring/gauging equipment has some kind of unique i.d number or similar). You could indicate on the board the cal status and recall/recal. date. Such a method has been used by my clients to good effect, since stickers don't always 'last' for a year or more, even if they do stick........(i.e they might not be legible due to constant wear).

It's also a good visual control for supervision so they can check on what equipment should be available to them............

Thx for the replies. I do currently use a board system where the eqipment id for each area is posted on each area. But again with the amount of mist in the air, which by the way is at an acceptable level according to official Health and safety readings is the problem. The only way i can see of getting round it is to laminate and change each board every time I calibrate. I am howver the lean coordinator at our plant and it goes against everythung i've learned about saving money.

Which part of Blighty are you from Andy?

hi,
i want to share my experience with you ppl,
we have printed id numbers on guages by various means ,
an inshouse simple software , keeps tracks of equipment ids and their due dates, we need not to run from equipment to equipment we just take a print out at the start of month which includes guage id , location and exact due date. after calibration we just update the software. no headache at all
regards

Pam,

I read about your method of color coding for gauge retrieval, a company called Q-Cee's sells colored coded calibration labels if you are interested.

Bruce, can you give me the additional details of these labels, like website, address etc. ?

Seems to be a good thread suddenly gone alive. I hope my experience with a system I designed might help.

Situation: An automotive company. Thousands of gauges floating around. Mostly Go-No Go. Not attached to any machine / operator. Of course, there were many other instruments...

The responsibility related to calibration was clearly split in two and defined as such in the Quality Manual. Metrology was responsible for MMD calibration and user (production) was responsible for using calibrated instruments.

Calibration frequency varied from once a quarter to once in three years. There were boards hanging all over the workplace anouncing colour codes in use e.g. red-2006, green-2007, blue-2008, yellow-2009. The board system was used to announce many a similar info including safety, corretive actions, recent issues, improvements, updates....

Calibration validity date was not defined in the system. It was validity month. This was marked using paint on the gauge. "9" said calibration is valid till September. Red 9 - Sept 06. Green 9 - Sept 2007...

If any user was found using an MMD with expired calibration, he was answerable.

Similarly, in the system, there was no issue if some gauge's calibration validity expired today and Metrology didnt retrive it. They were never responsible for retrieval. It was supposed to be delivered at their doorstep by whoever was using it. If he brought it in late, there was a system to ensure that its use didnt result in issues getting generated.

Believe me, such cases were rare.

Sorry, no suggestions on the oil mist issue. I haven't so far encountered such situations.
