Calibration Stickers or Other Methods of Identifying when Gages are Due?

Carol, some of these tools (the majority) of them are used for incoming / receiving insp., the rest are like you say basically used as reference tools. The concern I had was for the gages / tools used for product acceptance. I am going to do the calibration on the micrometers and calipers for the shop floor, and front office . The ones on the shop floor I will do annually, the ones in the front office will be done every two years. Most of what we measure here are steel tubes we have a tolerance of +/_-.060 to +/-.125 so most of the measuring tools used in the shop are tape measures, that I check annually to make sure they are ledgible and accurate.

My engineers all have a set of calipers they use for a variety of reasons - but none for product acceptance. I have a sales engineer that keeps a set in his car - just in case he needs them at a customers facility. All of these are marked "for reference only". I have never had an issue with this from a customer, internal auditors or our registration auditor.
Carol, there are no silly questions. It's a great question which many facilities do not do. It’s important to take some time, look at the equipment in the system and say: OK, what do we need? What are we using? If you don’t need it, don’t calibrate it. Lock it up, or more realistically, sell it on E-bay. Just like stuff at your house.

Some food for thought regarding your reference only suggestion. We spent some time on this subject on the ASQ site, and it really made me think about this concept. Akio made many posts on this that really had me see another side.

Evaluate this line of thought: “If it is important enough to read, then it should be calibrated/evaluated. If it is not important enough to need calibrating, why do we have it?” One poster made a good observation, though. Many equipment mfr. Make equipment with a bunch of gauges on it no one needs.

Maybe a good reality is somewhere in the middle.

Totally my opinion stuff:

As far as your sales engineer, maybe those would be the most important ones to be calibrated. Not from a quality standpoint but from a sales standpoint. Calipers can get bounced around in a car, so they can get off. When he/she needs them and they give “funny” readings, he/she may not be sure of what’s going on. Too, the sales engineer should look like the “expert” with more reliable equipment than the customer.

Good Morning Dean,

I tend to agree with Carol. If the tools are not used to accept or reject product then make them reference only. Secondly your calibration cycle time has to be based on sound data. This could be the manufacturers recommended cycle time. You could also establish a history that shows no need for adjustment to the tools over a specific period of time or calibration cycles. Here in my lab this cycle is no adjustments for 3 cycles and then I can extend the cycle time.

Hope this all helps.:)
