I am taking over calibration of hand tools (micrometers, calipers, drop indicators, etc.). The current calibration system is pretty archaic (just paper records with little to no organization). The unique names attached to the devices are hard to recognize. For example, we have a blade micrometer called 505, a 6 inch set of calipers named #505, OD micrometer called 505A, and another OD micrometer called #505C.
I want to go thru and rename the devices following a standard naming system, Z10001, Z10002 for example, when I do calibration. This will allow me to keep better records of the tools in a database. Our calibration records allow for multiple calibrations on a single piece of paper. I am planning on noting the new unique name on the paper next to the old name with a note about changing names.
Other than maintaining good records of the changed name, can anyone see other drawbacks I need to address/think about before I go thru this entire process?
As a note, all the tools belong to the company.
