Can a DFMEA (Design FMEA) effectively analyse design modifications?

You may be interested in Toyota's GD^3 method.
GD^3 stands for :

  • a good design
  • a good discussion
  • a good design review
A major tool in this method is the Design Review Based on Failure Mode (DRBFM). This uses FMEA as a starting point then focuses on the potential impact of design changes.

I was trying to make this point. Toyota engineers de developed the DRBFM method because the pure FMEA method is not effective enough for analysing design changes.
Toyota has an ability to simultaneously offer relatively high variety whilst retaining tight control of product development and manufacturing. They has the highest product variety of all other car manufacturers and has low volume of recalled vehicles as a percentage of registrations.

Failure prevention, if constrained by rigid models, will almost always fail.
