Can an Automotive Supplier require an IMDS # for a Non-Automotive part?

We are supplying a non-automotive part to a sub-supplier of automotive parts. They are requiring an IMDS # for the PPAP. My understanding is that unless the end user OEM is a subscriber to IMDS, they can not use the IMDS system or require a number. Any know for sure?

Honda requires MDS for non-automotive parts.

Some Truck manufacturers require MDS.

If it is a documented customer requirement, I suggest you meet their requirement.

Understand, If the customer requires it, then I guess we have to comply.

But my example is, we are supply a part to "Company A" that does business with "Honda", but we are making them a part that goes to "Fisher Price". And "Fisher Price"
doesnt require IMDS #'s. So why should I have to supply a IMDS # to "Company A"?

We currently are not set up to do IMDS, yet.

Note: "Company names" are changed to protect the innocent.

Hi, Tracer!

I understand your frustration. IMDS originated with the European Union (EU) End-of-Vehicle-Life directive and since the intent was to define all substances entering the EU, ensure recyclate markings, and identify any restricted or reportable substances it may be bleeding over as a requirement to other commoditiies like toys and imported household appliances, etc.

Working as an OEM Tier 1 I have generally helped out sub-tiers by simply checking the part mass, the sub-tier part number, and material composition. I would then go to IMDS and use materials that were already created by one of the standing IMDS organizations (IMS itself, S&E, CAS No. Search, etc.) and make a node for that component.

You may be able to persuade your customer to help you out by performing a similar service.

Best of luck!

IMDS is a particularly difficult protol to follow - if you have had no exposure or training for the system.

Honda is required by Law to comply - therefore you are required to do it assuming you want to provide the product.

My approach was to request that my customer support me as the process is not intuitive and without specific training - very difficult to follow.

My customer was very knowlegable and helpful - and it still took 8 months - a little at a time to get the submission right.

You should only submit an MDS to customers that require it.

In your example, your customer requires it, so it should not matter to you if your customer's customer is not requiring IMDS "yet".

(I can make the same argument with PPAP).

IMDS includes an automatic check against www.GADSL.org restricted substance list. Many companies follow this list and they would like to know if their products contain any of these substances.

IMDS is not that difficult. It takes a small learning curve to get familiar with the database, symbols and jargon.
