Can I exempt products/services from my AS9100 QMS?

#1
I work for a distributor of aerospace products, and we have an AS9100 QMS in place. Currently we exclude Section 8.3 because we don't do any design, but we're thinking about adding a service (product) where we can print tags for customers using their design or information. Everything will pretty much be automated, so I'm not sure if it even counts as design.

Three questions:

1) Will it trigger 8.3 if we're using customer-provided designs to print the tags?
2) Will it trigger 8.3 if we're only using customer-provided data (customer name, etc.), and punching them into our template?
3) If any of it does trigger 8.3, could I exclude this product from our QMS?

Thank you!

Design translates customer needs into specified requirements for a service or a product.

So, from what you say your organization is not responsible for design because your customer does the design.

You can therefore exclude clause 8.3 from your certification scope.

You may later choose to design and sell services to your customers in which case you would first extend the scope of your management system include design (and delivery) of these services before you extend the scope of your certificate to include design and delivery of such services.

1. No
2. Possibly. Who controls the design of the template? Was the template already in the public domain?
3. Possibly. It depends on how you word your scope of registration statement.

Keep in mind that any change in scope will likely trigger a re-evaluation that could be as much as a re-certification audit.

Even if you don't exclude design, your design process would be very simple. Your customer would send you what they want, you would create it and possibly get art approval, then you proceed to print, you might have to put a tag number and revision on it, and you keep records. Easy peasy.
