Hello guys,

I have a simple question:

Can I use the o/p for a Design of Experiments as Standard Deviation of the flow?

More precisely it's a PID loop to control the o/p and I was wondering if I can use P, I and D as input variables and Standard Deviation as o/p variable.

Now I am not well versed on PID, so I am doing some literature reading on that. I doubt if P,I and D's are independent of each other!

Thanks for your response in advance.

Regards,

Kumar

Can a DOE expert help out with this?
I think more information is needed as to what Kumar is trying to accomplish. I wasn't sure what he meant by PID, so for Covers similarly situated, there's information here: PID Controllers Explained
If Kumar explains the process and what he's trying to achieve, I'm sure someone here will be able to help.

Using the standard deviation of a process variable is a fairly common occurance in DOE studies. After all, reducing variation is one of the standard goals of any sort of quality improvement.

(One common use of PID controllers is for furnaces. I will talk in those terms because that is fairly intuitituve. Hopefully you can apply the comments to your specific application.)

P,I,& D values would be ideal candidates for input variables. If you will be using several setpoints, you might consider including the setpoint as a variable, since the best values of P,I,&D typically depend on the setpoint. The values for PID also can depend on the load. With a large object in a furnace, you may need different settings than if a furnace is nearly empty. So some sort of input variable for the load might also be appropriate.

For the output, in addition to the standard deviation (presumably measured after the temperature has mostly stabilized), it might be useful to also look at the rise time (how long it takes to get to the setpoint) and the overshoot (how much above the setpoint the temp goes before settling back toward the proper temp). A quick rise time means you are at the proper temp quicker, so you get the processing done more quickly. Overshoot is hardly important for some processes, but critical for others.

Optimizing for several outputs is more challenging that optimizing for one output, but many software packages have built-in tools to assist you. I use Minitab most often and it does have options for optimizing mutiple outputs. You would have to check any software you might have to see its capabilities.

Thanks guys

Thanks to all of you for replying.

Tim, thanks for your insight. I, also, use Minitab for all my tests and experiments.

I was gonna run this DOE but while brainstorming for the DOE we found out another "low hanging fruit" which might be responsible for more then 50% of variation. So I paretoed my thinking and currently working on that.

I am gonna bug you again once I get done with conquering this easy problem first.

Kumar
