Can PFMEA be used in disposition of NC material?

@deepikanegi, are you saying you have some nonconforming material, some people in your company want to rework or release to use-as-is, you want to use risk-based-thinking on that decision, and you want to use the FMEA format to document your risk-based thinking. That would be a non-traditional use of the FMEA tool, but it might be helpful as I described. FMEA-style thinking might facilitate a more comprehensive analysis, past the obvious, to include other stakeholder concerns and longer-term timeframes. In my scenario, the decision to use is made by decision makers with thorough consideration of risk. It would be a misuse of the FMEA tool if parts are deemed okay solely because the RPN score comes out lower than a arbitrary threshold.

Let's remember that PFMEA is a process, not a form. The form is a record of the process. It makes no sense to me to use the form, and the RPN calculations for standard MRB activities. What you describe as "FMEA-style thinking" (considering the risks of a decision) is what's done whenever a decision has to be made.

a well executed PFMEA might help with disposition, IF the nonconforming things are raw materials or in process material AND the PFMEA is clear in how the nonconformance will effect either the processes ability to produce conforming material OR conforming product. A fundamental purpose of the FMEA process is to identify potential critical input characteristics and to determine the tolerances on those input characteristics that will guarantee the production product that meets Customer needs. For companies that treat FMEA like a ‘check the box’ activity this is rarely done. If the FMEA was correctly done, then almost certainly the disposition of nonconforming material would be scrap, return to vendor or rework. It could not be use as is, because a correctly executed FMEA woul result in real tolerances such that any material that was non conforming to those tolerances would result in bad product.
If you are going to use the ‘thought process’ of PFMEA adn the debunked RPN thing then you might as well use a crystal ball. RPNs adn occurence are just guesses that are driven by our biasesa and agendas.

I guess the real response here is WHY do you want to use the PFMEA for disposition of nonconforming material ? HOW do you intend to use it? WHAT kind of material do you propose using it for?
