It's plenty clear that trans fat is bad.

but what cooking products contain it?
What baked product are likely to have it?

Does anyone have a link to a comprehensive list?

What is really baffling is many news stories talk about Crisco, but Crisco has new formulation that is wholly hydrogenated and the label stated 0 teans fat per tbs.

I'll all confused.

Whatever kills you is bad, and whatever makes you happy is good. All the rest is up for grabs. Whatever research says this year will most likely be invalidated at some point. Live life, admit that it ends someday, and make the most of each day.

The FDA has some good general information on the subject here.

I, too was a bit confused. This helped to clarify a bit. I went home last nite and read a bunch of labels, only to find nothing in my cabinets that contain trans fat.

I guess I don't have to worry too much because I avoid the fast foods.

Trans Fat = Saturated Fat. Vegetable oils, which are mainly unsaturated fat, are normally liquid at room temperature. To change vegetable oils to the semi-solid forms hydrogen molecules are added to the fatty acids and they become "hydrogenated". Now this process will also change some of the unsaturated fat into the “trans-fat” and “trans-fat” can be thought of as saturated fat. For the most part the less saturated fat you eat the better off you are. Too much of the trans fat may increase your LDL (bad) cholesterol and decrease your HDL (good) levels. (We discussed this in the Biology Class I was taking last semester)

Now with that being said with a good exercise program, eating plenty of garlic and drinking lots of red wine I wouldn’t worry too much about saturated or trans fat.

well - as I am fast approaching my 40th b-day and have two young children I'm feeling my mortality.
Plus, having lived that way for the first 35 or so years of my life, I'm trying to apologize to my body by eating better and exercizing more.

but from what I'm reading Trans fat is a product of, but is not the same as, saturated fat.

The running should whip you back in shape and the "garlic", ah not just bad fat but also vampires will be a miles away :lmao: .. and one thing stay away from "Haagen Dazs" which translate to heart disease :notme:

Non-saturated fat readily takes up hydrogen atoms. The "saturation" refers to the occupation of the sites on the molecule that can receive these "extra" Hydrogen atoms. As the degree of saturation increases, so does the melting point (all other things being equal). Complete H occupation of those sites results in total saturation. The TV show "Good Eats" has an episode with an excellent, layman's, explanation.

I don't know if this part is right or not, but it seems to me that any fat that is semi-solid at temperatures above 98.6 F can't be good...
