Can we exclude our subsidiary company from our ISO 9001 certification?

I'm having a difficult time finding the answer to a question I have and I didn't want to start a whole new thread so I thought I would just ask if anyone on this thread might know.

The company I work for is trying to get ISO certified and we were wondering if we could exclude our subsidiary company from the certification? I think that we can but I wonder if there are any stipulations. The parent company is called Senspex and the subsidiary is called Senspex Technical Services. Also, both companies do operate from the same location. Any information would be extremely helpful and I thank you in advance.

The answer will depend among other things on what the two companies do, and for whom.

I assume from your post-context that you're referring to ISO 9001?

I have moved your post to its own discussion thread. It would cause confusion in a discussion about a totally different subject.

shoegal,

Yes.

You can define the scope of your management system by its location and the services and products it governs.

And it's your management system not your company that is certified as conforming to ISO 9001.

And ISO does not certify. You'll need an accredited registrar that is respected by your current and future customers for that.

First you need to develop your organization's process-based management system. And the Cove has plenty of information on how to do that.

Hi Marc,

Thanks, sorry about that.

John,

Thanks for the information. I guess I still have a lot to learn with all this ISO certification business. I'm pretty new to it all but I think the Cove is a great forum with a lot of knowledgeable people! :thanks:

It will depend on your proposed scope of certification. If the scope of certification "implies" that the processes/products/services managed by the subsidiary are part of the system being certified, no, you should not be able to exclude it from the certification effort.

As long as there is no misconstruing of the certification, you can, together with your registrar define the scope of certification appropriately.

Did you omit the word "system", here John? Management (people) don't get certified, which is how this tends to read...

shoegal,

Please note my corrected post.

I missed the word system from management system.

Thanks,

John

Re: Can we exclude our subsidiary company from our certification?

All,

Thanks for your advice! And yes, I did mean ISO 9001. I guess you guys can tell I'm all new at this. Although I have been working to create the necessary and required procedures for the audit, a lot of the details regarding certification seem hard for me to grasp for some reason.
I guess we will just have to discuss the scope of what we are trying to get certified and go from there.
