Can you reference original FAI (First Article Inspection) after Delta?

Here's the situation:

We created a FAI for a first time build that required the parts to go to an outside vendor. After a few builds we find ourselves in a position that requires us to perform the process that our Vendor did. This required us to make a Delta (partial) FAI. Now that the time constraints are lifted we will be sending the parts back to the Vendor to have the work done. Do we need to create another Delta FAI? If our Travelers (jobs) went back to referencing the original FAI number would that meet the AS9102 requirement?

A little break down might help.

Job # 20012, New FAI (#100), Original build

Job # 20145, Referenced FAI (#100), Repeat build

Job # 21012, Referenced FAI (#100), Repeat build

Job # 22115, Delta FAI (#100A), Went from Vendor to in-house process

Job # 23455, Reference Original FAI (#100), Send back to Vendor for process

Can I go back and reference FAI# 100 or would I have to make another delta (FAI# 100B)

Thanks for your help.

Re: Can you reference original FAI after Delta?

It can depend who your customer is. In theory you can revert to the original but I assume you want to maintain the option to use the vendor or not so check with your customer and see what they require. If this is OEM then yes you can so long as less than 2 years have lapsed since you lasted manufactured to that FAI

If you meet the requirements of 5.3 and the following note- the answer is yes

AS9102 Rev A
"5.3 Partial or Re-accomplishment of First Article Inspection

The FAI requirement, once invoked, shall continue to apply even after initial compliance. The FAI requirements may be satisfied by a partial FAI that addresses differences between the current configuration and prior approved configurations. When a partial FAI is performed, the Organization shall complete only the affected fields in the FAI forms.

FAI requirements may also be satisfied by previously approved FAI performed on identical characteristics of similar parts produced by identical means. When FAI requirements (partial or complete) are satisfied in this manner, identify the approved configuration in the index of part numbers on Form 1."

... and check with the customer to see if they accept Delta FAIR.

Thanks for your help! Logically I couldn't see a reason why it couldn't be done that what but I wanted to see what other people thought.

Hopefully my Quality Director, and end customer, both agree.

Thanks again.
