Capability Studies and Monitoring Runs at a Metal Stamping Facility

I have recently moved to another company as a quality engineer and what I came from was checking parts on the CMM on a constant frequency to monitor the capability of our parts. I must mention that this was a CNC machining facility. Now I am at a stamping facility that rarely uses their CMM for production use only annual PPAP's or some problem solving issues.

Does anyone have experience with stamping facilities and what they have done in the past to monitor your quality of the parts from run to run whether it is with the CMM or gages.

Good question. I work in a stamping facility as well. We use our CMM for initial PPAP and also for an annual dimensionals of product. We also use it when a change to the part or process has occurred. The significance of the change that would require new capability studies on the CMM is determined by the QA Mgr., Production Mgr. and Process Eng
For normal production (high volume) we use gauges to check the critical aspects of the product at a rate determined by the Cp/CpK in our intial prove-out runs.

I guess my question is should we be running more parts on the CMM to help with statistically looking for trends and that sort of thing.

Stampings are a bit different than products made in a CNC machining company.

Hard tooling created characteristics (cut during the blanking operation) do not change significantly during the run and performing ongoing statistical studies on a shape or dimension isn't that practical.

Critical dimensions (significant) shown in the Control Plan that are created during the drawing operations can vary and should be monitored. An X bar and R chart (maybe individuals and moving range chart) could be used. There are limited uses for ongoing stats though in stamping operations.

You will find attribute characteristics such as short blank, crack and burrs are more prevalent in this environment. One would also find that holes patterns are frequently checked with a checking fixtures in this type of operation.

So then my primary objective must be to verify that my gages are correct, is that a safe assumption?

Yes, make sure that the gauges are correct especially the ones for positional tolerances. Do not assume that Gage Makers know GD&T. What gages tolerances were used and how was it applied. Can an attribute gauge accept a nonconforming product?

I would also go over the Control Plan. Are the characteristics confirmed at the correct process step? Are the confirmation methods correct? Have the correct gages been allotted?

Of course, are people doing what they are supposed to do?
