PEOPLE TALKING ON THIER PHONE WHILE DRIVING SHOULD BE SHOT.
I lost a close friend 2 years ago in a car accident, the person that crashed into her car was on his phone at the time. She was stationary in a queue of traffic!

I found it interesting that while we were driving my 12 year old son to an athletic event, (I was a passenger), I noticed 8 cars in a row who were talking on a phone while driving, at rush hour. Navigating through rush hour in the Detroit metro area is an art form in itself.

I have actually seen "drivers", come almost to a complete stop in a 40 mph zone, because they were so entrenched in their conversation. I admit to talking myself while driving once in a great while. I would be interested to see if there is any data yet that shows cell phone related accidents.

A young man (19) across the street from me was involved in an accident that killed a 47 year old mother of two girls. Why, he was text messaging while driving, dropped the phone on the floor and.......Tragic!!!!!!!!!

Well I say live and let live, another ban on something isn't going to do much. :)

On the other hand I think that if you killed someone in a car accident and it was your fault because you did something stupid (like talk on the phone and not pay attention to trafic) you should atleast be charged with manslaughter charges because it was your neglect that killed the other person.

HANG 'EM FROM THE HIGHEST TREE!!!! Claes I know what you mean, I know how vulnerable you feel on your mountain bike, try riding at 70 m.p.h. on a motorcycle in traffic with a bunch of idiots on thier cell phones. I can't even begin to count the times I have almost been run off the road by these fools. I put louder pipes on my bike and when I see some one talking and driving I pull up along side of them and make sure they can't hear who there talking to. If its an emergency pull to the side of the road (or other safe place and talk).Thanx for letting me vent.

I am ABSOLUTELY, CATEGORICALLY and ADAMANTLY AGAINST cell phones while driving. The only time I need to talk on the phone is when I'm at work or at home - I don't need to talk while commuting nor does anyone else!

:topic: Not exactly on topic, but sort of... And while we're at it, I'm also against cell phones in public places (Theaters, Plays, Restaurants, etc.)! ...and for God's sake, why do you need a cell phone at the grocery store!? Make a list before you go - and if you aren't sure if you're supposed to pick up (peas or carrots), GET BOTH or MAKE AN EXECUTIVE DECISION!!! These things annoy me almost beyond words.

(in case you couldn't tell - I don't own one) I suppose at some point, I'll succumb, but I'm quite certain when I finally do "break down" it will be turned off 95% of the time! I can think of two instances where, when I had a 35-mi. commute, I could have used one when I was stuck in stand-still traffic due to an accident; just so the folks at home didn't have to worry.

My whole thought is, "why should I purchase something that will more than double my phone bill, just so I can be annoyed 24-7?" When I'm in the car, I don't need to be bothered. When I'm at a show, I'm there to enjoy the show - AWAY from all the other distractions of life... THAT'S WHY I BOUGHT TICKETS IN THE FIRST PLACE!!! ...and I'm capable of making that all important decision as the supermarket too!

...ok, I'm through now...:thanx:

Sure, but what would that be in aid of? The victim would still be just as dead...

Here in NJ it's illegal to use a handheld phone while driving.
But it's so rarely enforced as to be pointless.

I prefer that people don't but I can't say that I have never. I used to have handsfree set when I spent a lot of time on the road, but not with my current phone.

Generally I think most people can handle it if they are going a reasonble speed on a main road. I drive one handed on the highway anyway so what's the difference if I'm holding a phone or manipuating the stereo/shuffling CDs?

What bugs me is people yapping on a phone while driving through a neighborhood filled with kids or around a parking lot. At my son's day care there is one mom who gets her kid the same time I get mine and every day she pulls in with her gigunta SUV with the cell phone on her ear.

Last night I was following a guy who needed three hands because he had a manual was trying to shift, turn, and balance a phone.

I am against idiots. Some people cannot drive, period. They are the ones who are yakking away with their best friend saying absolutely nothing. If you have to pick it up, it shouldn't be used in your car. I do ocassionally use my car phone to check on the kids, especially if I am running late (they get worried, isn't that sweet?) or maybe three times a year to order take out to pick up on my way past. All calls are less than 45 seconds. I don't even like to talk on my land line for more than a couple of minutes, why yak it up on a cell phone the size of a silver dollar?

Actually, you've got me on a roll now. I think that they should be banned in all buildings except your home, and some outdoor places (outdoor cafe`s, sporting complexes and other public gathering places.) I guess I am just too anti-social to live in today's phone crazy society.

I am a bit puzzled by some of these responses. Are you all assuming we are talking about hands-free phones? (legal in most or all countries) or hand-held phones (illegal to use while driving in UK and some other countries). The legal debate in the UK about hand-helds is over. The debate about hands-free has begun. Some public sector employees and service engineers in UK are already banned in their contract of service from using hands-free while working. They are starting to use automatic call-divert systems to a call centre which they can access when they take a break.

Legally, misuse of hands-free in the UK could be treated the same as any other "lack of due care and attention" such as reading a map or eating a banana or whatever - or if there were serious injuries to persons then the penalty would escalate, even if normal use is legal.

Here in NJ it's illegal to use a handheld phone while driving.
I saw an article in our local paper a couple of days ago where New Dehli has passed an ordinance (law?) making it illegal in their city. I'll try to find it and post it (unless someone else beats me to it).
