Checking and approval of drawings

I know I've seen (or heard) somewhere that all mechanical drawings must be checked by a second person and then approved by a person with authority. Does anyone know where? Is this an interpretation? I have trouble getting our designers/detailers to do this. Need to prove to them that it is a requirement.

Michael:

QS9000 only states that documents shall be reviewed and approved by authorized personnel. How you assimilate this requirement into your doc and data control and design control processes is up to you. However, almost every place I've ever worked had a 2nd party review process for prints and drawings. The approval process has worked differently, but most often, the head engineer gave final approval. Customer approval may also be in order, especially when it comes to design changes. Review elements 4.4 and 4.5 in the QS manual for further clarification.

The standard only requires that the drawings be checked and approved. It does not mandate that it be done by two different individuals. If you currently let the same person perform both operations, and it is working for you, there is no need to change, as long as your procedures allow that situation. If the practice of letting the same person draw and check drawings causes you a problem later in the process, your Corrective and Preventative Action process should catch the problem, lead you to the root cause and the solution.
IMHO, it is unwise to change things that are working for you, unless you try hard and cannot fiqure out a way to interpret the standard to allow them.
