Ideally you should be making a list of questions before every audit. This allows you to review the process and any work instructions. From them you look for the open questions. Be inquisitive! Where can they explain how they are supposed to do something? Where can they show you how the data is recorded? Can they show you quality inspection records that have been done during a specific time period? Do all of these things correspond with how they said that they are to accomplish these things in their process and work instructions?
Your checklist can actually be as easy as what you want explained, shown and proved.
But be ready to record what you find and who you interviewed in each case. This is your proof of conducting your audit and the means for putting together your report afterwards. Remember, you are there to help them, not the bad guy! In your findings and report, put the things that you see are working well as well as what is broken. The good things will encourage them to think that ISO is not impossible to follow.
