A lure- A trick or trap.

Sounds simple and provides an easy "statement". But there is so much time that should be dedicated to discussing lures, and how they work.

Those lures also work on adult men and women.

A stranger is someone you don't know (and for kid's, your parents have not introduced you to). If they are a stranger, do not let them in your personal space. Ever.

Say I'm walking along and I see a woman that looks worried or something. I'm a stranger. I would never get within 10 feet of her; so as to not scare her. Too, she could be part of a lure.

****

Much of this will probably sound really paranoid. I don't think I'm paranoid; just careful. Like Gavin Debecker in his book The Gift of Fear drives home, I would rather be labeled as paranoid or rude, and have my wife and kids home with me every night. :)

Living in São Paulo Brazil where crime rates sky rocket, I constantly am talking about safety with my 10 year old daughter (she´s also training Karate with me, and I taught her one really good kick right in between the legs of any predator). About 90% of the cars in São Paulo have darkened windows, it is not legal, however, the Police tend to close an eye to it.
In regards to the stickers with kids names on it, it is recommended by all specialists here to not have them. It does give the bad guys info about you and your routine.
I have also read that keeping eye contact with a possible predator or thief is also good, besides intimidating them, it creates a sense of "I know you", studies here show that thieves will tend to back off as they feel "they know the person" and they would rather attack someone completly unknown.
Dropping off or picking up from school it´s either me or my wife... nobody else. The kids are not allowed to leave school premises (it´s all gated) without one of us.
All in all, the hints, measures and clues already given are all great !

Prevention is always the best measure for our kids safety ! (see 8.5.3 :lmao:)

The thing I've always heard is to always have a plan. If you're walking down the street, think about possible situations that may arise and what your reaction to any of them might be. Preparing your keys to become a weapon is one solution. Finding a public place (bar, restaurant) is another, although not always an option. I used to work for the Feds in law enforcement and while I was at the academy our PT instructor said to "have a plan to kill everyone all the time." Pretty straight forward, but the idea is for you to go home to your family, not the bad guy.

Although I don't have children, something I've heard about is a gps tracker for kids. Although I personally don't know anyone that actually uses this technology for the sake of their children's whereabouts, it seems like it's definitely something to look into.

Don't forget internet protection for kids.

I know of case close to me where the parents felt they had taught their child about safety on the internet and that they could trust them.....

At 12 yrs old the child found child porn unbeknownst to the parents. The curiosity became obsession to addiction over the years. The police followed this for 9 yrs before acting on it when the child became 21 and filed federal charges.

Your kids can run across ANYTHING on the internet. Don't trust them to know right from wrong. You need to control their access.

This is a great example to see if your child understands how tricky predators can be - this was a conversation I had with one of my children about 15 years ago.

Me (talking to my then 6 y/o son): Hey Bud - we've talked before about what to do if a stanger approaches - can you tell me again.

Son - sure, Mom - the first thing I do is to run away - come home or to one of the neighbor's house - whatever is the closest to me.

Me - good, Son. Now what would you do if a car stopped and a woman said she has lost her dog and could you help her find it?

Son - I would help her find her lost dog, Mom.

Me - WRONG! (and total look of horror on his face). This is how strangers try to grab kids. These bad strangers don't look evil or mean and they try to trick you.

Son - (tears welling in his eyes) ......why are people so mean to kids......

Fortunately, my son is a smart kid and could process this information properly - a lot of kids would freak at this conversation at the age of 6. But at his age, one of his failings was he was very friendly and very outgoing and would help out a stranger in a situation like this.

A few years ago I taught my oldest daughter about kicking/screaming, etc, and the kick between the legs. I now do know that she learned the lesson.

Last year her and I were at the shopping center, my older brother saw us from behind and thought it would be a good idea to scoop her up as a surprise. BOY, WAS HE WRONG.

My daughter (9 years old, 50 pounds, wearing heeled shoes) put my brother (44 years old, 6'2" 210 pounds) into a crumpled heap on the floor in less than 5 seconds.

It's the simple things that they need to know, and TRAIN on them, so it becomes instinct!

Also, if you go to an amusement park, take pictures of the kids with your cell phone immediately before entering. This way, if something happens, in a moment of panic, you can easily recall exactly what they are wearing, and give the best description possible. The police can also use that picture to put out a very current alert.

:agree1: Good for you, Carol.

One thing everyone needs to work on with kids is the distance principle. They instinctively need to know to take at least two steps back. This gives them distance. And yes....this includes teachers at school. No one (except family) should be up in a kid's personal zone. Kids have to learn to get that distance.

Good stuff.:agree1: You used a key word there that made my week: train. They must train with this stuff. If you have trusted co-workers that would be willing to approach your kid to see if they use the distance principle and stuff. The more realistic training, the better.

Communication by parents is so essential. The kids need to know it's ok for them to step away from an adult, to run, to say "no". More importantly, they need to know that they can tell you if someone touches them inappropriately. A good way to do that is the bathing suit scenario. No one should never touch them where their body is covered with a bathing suit. If they are touched (doesn't matter who; doctor, grandma, whatever) they need to know it's OK for them to tell you.
