Chinese drywall poses potential hydrogen sulfide risks

Friends,

From msn.com:

PARKLAND, Fla. - At the height of the U.S. housing boom, when building materials were in short supply, American construction companies used millions of pounds of Chinese-made drywall because it was abundant and cheap.

Now that decision is haunting hundreds of homeowners and apartment dwellers who are concerned that the wallboard gives off fumes that can corrode copper pipes, blacken jewelry and silverware, and possibly sicken people.

Shipping records reviewed by The Associated Press indicate that imports of potentially tainted Chinese building materials exceeded 500 million pounds during a four-year period of soaring home prices. The drywall may have been used in more than 100,000 homes, according to some estimates, including houses rebuilt after Hurricane Katrina.

Re: Chinese drywall poses potential risks, AP finds

Let's face it, it's hard to trust anything made in China.
Toys, pet food, toothpaste, baby food, auto parts and now drywall. What's next?

Re: Chinese drywall poses potential risks, AP finds

I'm not convinced things made or processed in the US are always that much safer. It depends mostly on regulations and enforcement of regulations. From slaughter houses to the recent peanut incidents, the US has its share of potential product risks.

There is also the issue of US companies, which have imported the many different Chinese manufactured goods, which often appear not to have properly assessed the product they were importing. Mattel, for example, was a company that supplied the specifications and design of the lead painted toys that ended up here.

I think there is a lot of blame to go around.

It's simple. Either trust the manufacturer, or trust the standard to which the product is certified and the regulatory/conformance system that assures you of the validity of that certification.

Or, trust but verify.

Back to the subject at hand, ;) I read an article in February when I was in Florida about this same subject.

There is some question to the validity of the Chinese claim as yes part of the processing is in China, however, in many cases there were many hands in the USA (possibly Canada but nothing has come out about this yet) that did further processing and handling before it ever got into a home.

As has been stated, there is plenty of blame to hand out to everyone for things like this!

I feel like I am repeating myself however the root cause is everyone's drive to make that extra buck (or not spend that extra buck). One word - Greed.

This doesn't just apply to the CEO's of the world but you and I as our behaviours and wants drive how the market works. We may not individually have the most money but as a group we do so companies do listen when the majority of us act in a particular way. In this case, we wanted the big screen TV's, the fancy cars, etc., etc., so they found a way to offer that at a price we could afford (or at least had room on our credit cards for it) - hence offshore production. Sorry, I will get off my soapbox now.

As devil's advocate - If you trust, there's no need for verification.

My version: Don't 'trust', always verify (preferably independent verification).

Yes, but we usually can only verify a sample. We trust that our sampling, and the honesty of the supplier, ensures that the population is not tainted.

There are reports, for instance, that the peanut company's testing did find the bugs...

I wonder if any testing was done on the wallboard. Aren't there regulations concerning that type of thing?
