Chromate Colour Issue - Yellow Chromate per AIPS02-05-001

Hi all,
I recently bumped into an issue below:

A part meant for aerospace usage was yellow chromated as per AIPS02-05-001, The Airbus Process Specification for Chemical Conversion Coating. The base material is A2024 CLAD T351.

Upon inspection of the processes part, we notice a symptom of 2-tone colour of the final finishing.

Eventually, the appearance of the machined area of light-bright-yellowish was the desired result. However, the original CLAD surface (non-machined area) appears as dull-brownish colour.

The issue now: IS THIS NORMAL? I personally had seen quite a number of yellow chromated aluminium parts, but this is the first for me...

Appreciate if anyone could share your comment and experiences..

No experience of the spec quoted, however, the condition of base material will have a significant effect upon cosmetic appearance of chromate finishes, this is an accepted phenomenon in the automotive industry.

Hi Darrel,
I guess you are right.. Over the weekend, we had a trial at different chromating house with the same spec, and all turn out to be identical.. Even though some have lighter color..

Guess it's the material property..

I do not think it is material property. I think it has to do with reflection of light. You should see the correct color on machined surface because it is smooth whereas, on the non machined surface, the reflection is diffused and hence you see a different color - usually darker and dull.

It is base material condition,
If you plate different surface finishes (machined / un-machined) you will get different results, also, the non-machined surface will be more oxidised than the machined surface, this could also contribute.

if your customer demands a uniform finish, I would suggest you need to incorporate a process like bead blast or chemical etch which will then give a consistent surface to plate. This will bring into play a new raft of problems of course.

Final thought, it is the passivation which gives corrosion resistance not the chromate, I don't know if this is relevant to your situation
