Clause 7.3 - Verification and validation of the sub assemblies and the final product?

We are trying to implement section 7.3 and I have a question on the following.

We have several sub assemblies which make up the final product. If we where to have our verification and validation at the completion of the sub assemblies and when the final product is finished would that be enough? Should there be more? If so then where?

Thanks in advance,

Matt

Maybe, maybe, and I don't know.

I don't think those questions can be answered without knowing what the product is, what is critical, what processes are involved, etc. Do the verification and validation where it makes sense to do it. As long as you have verified and validated the input requirements, it doesn't matter when they get done.

Hi Matt, and welcome to the Cove :bigwave:

First of all, I'm moving this thread to the ISO 900X forum (assuming we're talking about ISO9001:2000, clause 7.3). I think we'll get more posts that way.

Concening your question, I agree with Howste: It depends on your operation, and as long as it gets done it doesn't really matter where and when as far as the standard is concerned. I (Of course, the old saying "the sooner the better" applies).

There is one thing i wonder about, though: Are we talking about 7.3.1b here?

During the design and development planning, the organization shall determine...

b) the review, verification and validation that are appropriate to each design and development stage...) That would lead on to 7.3.5 and 7.3.6.

From your description (sub assemblies and when the final product is finished) it sounds a bit like 7.5.2, 8.2.3 and 8.2.4...?

First off Thanks for the welcome all.

Claes,
Yes, I am refering to 7.3.1b of 9001:2000. And thanks for the move:)
I was thinking of having verifications and validations done at the completion of each of the newly designed sub-assemblies and at the end of the D&D process when the product is final assembled. Was not sure if this would be enough.

el, what do you and your customers require?
gpainter,

As far as requirements go, we have been working to MIL-I-45208A which has few controls for design. The main problem is our Chief Engineer is also the president and he is trying to exclude himself (Engineering) from ISO system. Now, this would be great if there were no problems with the design aspect but, right now its a constant battle for Quality and Production to recieve correct documentation and we have a hard time delivering sound working prototypes to the customer. Anyway, I want to make sure I am being thorough enough but, at the same time I dont want it to be rejected from the design department.

As you can see, it is a very troublesome situation. Please help:)

Thanks again,

el stopo,

We have subassembly as well and we verify/validate at each stage so that we can make sure our internal customers are getting what they need to carry out the remainder of the processes. This method also helps us to identify nonconformances prior to completion of the job (just in case we need to manufacture replacement parts). I hope this helps
