Closing out CAR while waiting for design change

i hope this isn't a repeat of another thread. I'm hoping to get input on how to close a CAR if the CAPA is a design change but engineering is saying that due to costs, the next design revision will not be until 2-3 years. At that time, they will incorporate the design change documented on the CAR. I don't want to leave the CAR open that long. Ideas on how to document and close the CAR?

Also, have another CAR where the component was sent back but was damaged and destroyed before being able to investigate. Haven't seen that specific complaint from customer again nor in process. How best to close this out?

You did not mention if the part to be re-engineered will be produced until the new design is released. Obviously, if the part will be manufactured until the new design is released, what is being done to prevent the problem that triggered the CAR, to start with?

As for not wanting to leave a CAR open for another 3 years, WHY? Why would anyone artificially close a CAR without SOUND EVIDENCE that the fix was implemented and, much more importantly, effective in preventing the problem from recurring?

Also, have another CAR where the component was sent back but was damaged and destroyed before being able to investigate. Haven't seen that specific complaint from customer again nor in process. How best to close this out?
It depends on the criticality of the reported problem. Was it a nuisance or a serious injury? Was it a minor performance issue or a total breakdown of the equipment? Risk Based Thinking.

The only issue with leaving the CAR open for three years is making a good risk based assessment of why that is acceptable, if you can do this, then you have no problem.

Well, yes. But you have to make that assessment anyway early in the corrective action process, and you may have to re-evaluate a few times before it is closed out.

All you really have to do to understand why I am adamant that a corrective action can not be closed out prior to completion: The last part is always: Have evidence of effectiveness of the action(s) taken.

I had a corrective action once that could not be resolved without purchasing a very expensive unique component that we would never have a use for, in order to investigate a single complaint by a single customer about one unit we sold them that they had some dissatisfaction with.

I inherited the CAR from somebody who was never able to do anything about it, and neither was I. I finally closed it noting that the corrective action was not effective.

in the case above, i would think cost obviously had an impact on the practicality of the CAR. Risk vs reward??

Anyone who convinces their bosses to spend $10k to fix a $500 problem should be actively looking for a new job. :naughty:
I would consider promoting them and moving them into external sales...and can the manager who approved the 10K.
You can't waste skills like that, but you have to point them in the right direction.
