CMM measurement using 2D drawings

P

PHANTOM

I am new to CMM so please tolerate my basic questions.
My boss wants to buy a CMM to measure specific aspects of complex parts but we wont be getting the CAD models, we have to use only 2D prints. Will todays CMMs provide me useful measurement capability or must I have a 3D model?

A CMM is can be used for the typical dimensions off a 2D drawing: diameters, lengths, forms(roundness/parallelism/flatness), position, etc. A 3D model is only needed if you are looking at 'complex' shapes such as the form of a mold, curves, turbine blades.

Some CMMs can even handle the 'standard' complex shapes like gear forms or threads off just a 2D drawing.
