Welcome to The Cove! :bigwave: Wow, your plate is piled high isn't it?

EMS and OSHAS have so much in common that implementing them together is doable - in fact, I would prefer doing that over merging the systems later as I will be eventually doing where I work.

In this thread I included a link to an information source from LRQA that may be of some initial help. (I am not affiliated with LRQA) The site also has LRQA's implementation planner for ISO14001 to help give you some idea of what to expect.

IMO, You should first attend schools in both of these standards, to make ready for designing a system. I have also found it helpful to have OSHA's 10-hour card, which you may be able to get with help of your state's Dept of Labor. Check your state's web site for information on available training help for employers; maybe there is something for environmental too.

Knowing how each of these 2 standards relate to each other makes the starting part much easier. Have a look at: OHSAS14k9k2k comp.doc (ISO 9001 VS ISO 14001 VS OHSAS 18001)

Note: the ISO 14001 in the comparison table is the 1996 version which is slightly different from the 2004 version. There is also a comparison table for these 2 in the files attachment list.

Before I joined the Dark Side (aka Corporate), I worked at a site and was tasked with integrating the systems. The management group was...and is...a firm believer in one-stop shopping. The managers didn't want a quality management system...an environmental management system....a health & safety system....they wanted a business management system or BMS.

Our own company's core system is based on Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) and that was, I decided, to be the set-up of our BMS. From there, I studied our applicable standards and aligned them with PDCA. The end result was a matrix in a PDCA format that showed the alignment between ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, ISRS, Sarbanes-Oxley and our own company's business system requirements. Due to the confidential nature of our own company's requirements, I am unable to share the matrix at this time. I will look at it, however, and see if I can tweek it by removing company-related information.

That being said, I was only able to do this based on my own knowledge of the company, along with training in the applicable standards.

What the matrix enabled me to do next was align our system and processes. Internal auditing was internal auditing...it didn't matter the scope. The concepts and flow were the same, while the people might be different. In the following year, we worked on integrated audits and they continue - even after my absence - to do internal audits that address the requirements of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. I hadn't evolved yet to incoproate health and safety and no one has run with that since I left.

Nonconformances and corrective action were the same, no matter what. Same log. Same form. Same system.

It has helped the site in breaking down the walls between departments and in having everyone speak the same language.

Thank you all for the replies.

I have read both standards 14001 and 18001. I have an idea now about both standards, yet I still need to see some implementation sample, Implementation template. Can someone please send me a sample of their plan? I don’t know where to start and how to build my plan up. It does not matter if your plan has to do with another company and its products; I think somehow the plan should be the same in principals. Any kind of excel spreadsheet, or else would help. Overall plagiarism (if allowed by the source :) ) it is good sometimes if the purpose of using it bring us the good and the comfortable.

Hi indrit,

I would suggest you to first go through the requirements for ISO 14001 and OHSAS in detail.Carry out a gap analysis of your organisation.find out what are gaps ..Select core team member through the management.
Familiarize the members to the iso 14001/18001 through a training programme and ensure it is perculated down.

Together with the core team members fill the gap,prepare procedures,records as necessary...ensure reckoner ongovernment regulation on safety and environment also si simultanously prepared.

Prepare Manual on env and safety.

train internal auditors.
conduct internal audit.
conduct MRM and then apply for certification.

YOU CAN DO IT.
