The accredited certification process allows for limited scope of certification. As long as there is no misrepresentation of what is certified, no foul. Check this link.

Good link, it references processes and activities, a certain registrar or probably quite a few of them are allowing activites that cover a particular product. Never quite felt like that was the intent of the standard even though scoping as such is allowed...

I know of a companies that have done just that. No intent to fool anybody, it just has to do with different customer sets with different expectations: one or two very large customers that definitely want registration and some smaller outfits that can't even spell ISO.

As far as I can tell, none have saved much work with this approach. They have caused themselves some amount of confusion.
