Compliance Obligations 6.1.3 of ISO 14001

#1
I am in the process developing our system for ISO14001.

Under 6.1.3 are we required to fully understand all levels of government regulations and legislation as it pertains to the environment; how far do we need to go?

We are a stocking distributor of aerospace hardware and related product. I would be really interested in hearing how others are addressing this requirement. I have been told that we need a compliance register and we need to monitor all the legislation to ensure that we comply on an on-going basis.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Only those that are specifically applicable to you, and yes, federal state & local as well as any industry or other requirements....It's applicable to you only and what you've identified as environmental aspects.....Shouldn't be many

Welcome Kimber!

As Randy said, the regulations you are to be concerned about are about how your organization impacts or could impact the environment. Air, water, soil, waste, and consider natural resource consumption too.

It is important to identify who does what. The ownership of the infrastructure matters. Do you rent or lease your building - and if so, does the building owner service the air conditioning unit(s)? If so, the building's owner is responsible for complying with Section 608 of the Clean Air Act. However, if you hire someone to do that service and pay them, you are responsible.

If you service your forklifts on the premises, you are responsible for proper cleanup of spills that might occur, and handling of the waste afterward. If you store chemicals belonging to others, you are responsible for proper storage and addressing leaks if they occur - and the cleanup waste afterward.

I welcome Randy to correct me if I stray. ;)

After doing an aspect-impact study, you should be able to identify the compliance obligations applicable based on the impact of an aspect.

It can be the rules & regulations related to Hazardous waste management, air emissions (pollution), water pollution, etc.
