Component traceability in an assembly - Government contract - How far does it go?

I'm sure there will be many opinions on this, but we have a bit of a debate going on in house about whether component traceability in an assembly made on a government contract includes small, non-critical items like snap rings and end plates, or is it limited to the major components?

If there is an authority to cite on this, please add it with your response.

:thanx:

Not enough info. What standards are cited in the contract?

As far as aviation goes.... we are required to have a back to birth trace for life limited parts, but everything else, the trace requirement extends only to the last operator. Some of our customers have higher requirments for certain parts, so that would depend on the contract.

errhine, would define "life limited" parts for me?

A part that could be used for a limited number of operating hours. The reason for that requirement is to prevent a part from being sold after its "life" is up.

At one point in my career, I designed applications for Truarc Retaining Rings. I can assure you NONE of my applications for these "snap rings" was non-critical.

In aerospace, EVERY component needs traceability. The decision is whether to trace to a lot (shipment or manufacturing lot) or a serial-numbered individual piece. There is a poem which begins, "For want of a nail, the shoe was lost . . ." which illustrates how little things can have big consequences.

What happens if the component fails? Was the cause faulty material, faulty installation, or faulty design of the assembly which exceeded the rated capacity of the component? Traceability helps limit the number of variables for the root cause examination when there is a failure. Would you rather recall one lot of assemblies manufactured with snap rings from lot 101a which had a known heat treating furnace failure or ALL assemblies because you don't know which snap ring manufacturer or lot number was installed on the failed assembly?

:agree1: In my aviation life, we traced every nut, bolt and screw. We also traced consumables like adhesive and solder. Checkout the traceability requirements on page 4 of AEROJET'S QA Provisions.

We're not doing aerospace work, thank goodness.

Here's the specs we see most commonly on contracts: mil-197, mil-130, far 52.246-2,QAP-BO1 and O2, ansI Z1.4-1993,ISO 10012-1, ansi Z540-1-1994, far 52.246-11.

Does this tell you anything Al? (Sorry for the delay, I needed to consult with my contract review guy)

I did a cursory check of these and none relate to traceability. Which clause in the contract calls out a requirement for traceability?
