Electronics "Commercial grade" vs "Automotive grade"

Hi, everyone;

Could someone help me? I'm looking for detailed and specific definitions for "Commercial grade" & "Automotive grade" for electronic components.
At the moment I'm having a problem with some diode device and I do need to prepare a research report regarding both concepts.
Also, I'm needing a reference document/international standard/article for consulting quality differences, in order to evidence this information.

I will appreciate your support & your quick response as possible.
Thank you very much!!!

I'm no expert in this area, but I've heard a theory that electronic component manufacturers will sort their product by grade. I believe this happened (maybe still does) with new Intel micros - all were made the same, but some could run at 33Mhz, some only 25, etc. - so they tested each one and graded it accordingly. The theory goes that since automotive puts so much price pressure on the supply chain that one cost cutting move is to sort out the marginal product and sell it to the automotive suppliers. This shows up in reduced reliability over time. The "better" components get sold to the customers that pay a little more (and probably faster).

Sorry, can't supply any facts, specs or anything else - just suspicions. Those in the component business might know more.

Typically I have seen these as company specific definitions. If anything, automotive customers might proscribe certain requirements that 'commercial grade' does not including aspects such as inspection / test.

It get's more touchy when you get into fields such as munitions and aerospace / marine equipment. For example, a government contract may call for China Lake certified solderers which are hard to find and expensive. If there is a 'commercial grade' version of the product certified solderers may not be required.

Many people will argue tht is, or should not be, no difference.

Just some starter thoughts.

One other point to consider, once your research paper is complete, you may need to have your device tested to provide independent verification of the conclusions.
