Re: Need Template/ format on Continuous Improvement

Ouch! This is an interesting request. It sounds like one might want to develop a rubber stamp approach to continuous improvement. IMHO I am not so sure that is a good idea. You need a process, but as the inputs enter the process each opportunity should have a very unique circumstance - which tends to preclude a "template" approach. You can use a standard project template, I suppose, that looks at a goal and steps to achieve that goal - but I do not think you can "dial it in" to specifically continuous improvement.

It's easy to decide continuous improvement is mysterious, complex, and needs a tool box like Six Sigma. But it doesn't need to be complex. Plan-Do-Check-Act is the only template I will offer you because like Bob, I don't want you to feel locked in to a certain method. Continuous improvement can be as simple as a 5S project. The tricky part is how to understand the impact; some effectiveness measurement should be defined so you can do a before/after analysis.

That said, maybe you just need something to give you confidence. There are some related threads at the bottom of this page, and this list of attachments I found via a key word search in the Post Attachments List - see the green button in the header.

I have always felt that one should "feel" the continuous improvement.... after a full audit of all the organizations processes, the auditor should "feel" this improvement through indicators, customer satisfaction, management involvment, increase in resources and etc....

Provide a template or format for documenting continuous improvement projects / activities
Isn't that what Management Review is for?

The principle is that by looking at the performance of the management system, top management are supposed to be able to determine where improvements should be made! It's their job to provide resources and direction to the people making the improvements.

Then, at subsequent reviews the performance of that improvement can be reviewed and lead to the next improvement.

IMHO - it has little to do with audits etc. (in most organizations audits have little to do with tangible improvements or $$$ saved) and, as Bob correctly says, there shouldn't be a need to apply another document to record improvements - you already have (or should) the most appropriate mechnism in place!

Provide a template or format for documenting continuous improvement projects / activities
As alluded to by our fellow covers there are several means to CI ( audits, Preventive and Corrective Action, Lean Initiatives, Six Sigma, Poke-Yoke, etc...). If you are looking for a way to track the various improvements I would suggest developing a simple matrix in a database or excel sheet that lists:
Action
Target Date for completion
Actual Completion Date
Responsible Party
Improvement Driver (Customer CAR, Internal CAR, Audit Finding, 6-Sigma Project, Etc...)
Result (tie this to Cost or a key objective as much as possible)

Obviously, your list may look different but just make it work for you and your company. I am currently setting up tracking this type of information on a large white board in my Lab.

It is being used as a tracking center for improvement, CARs and New Product Development. I was tired of being asked all the time about project status So shortly they will be able to look at the board (or i can just point to it).

Hope this is helpful.

I too have been looking for best or good practices in regard to what I call a CI Plan (Continuous Improvement) but have not had much success.

Re: Need Template/ format on Continuous Improvement

I don't think this is a request for a "rubber stamp" type approach, although I could be wrong. I know I myself am looking for a CI template, to customize, to meet the KPI's of my current company.

A typical management review (in my experience with TS 16949, ISO 14001) will not provide enough improvement activities to create a true lean culture. The book by Pascal Dennis, titled "Getting The Right Things Done" , illustrates very well, the concept of strategy deployment. I just finished this book, and would highly recommend it to everyone.

Hi

As Interesting the topic is, this is also very comprehensive. well my few cents or my personnal opinion is using a 8D report in a way organises all activities in your improvement initiative, including the source of problem, the problem itself and the final disposition of the solution and its effectiveness.

So i would recommend to use your 8D reporting template for CI projecs.

any views from fellow Covers on this?

thanks and regards
