How big is the scope of a FMEA?
It depends. How many steps are in the process? Each step's potential causes of failure needs to be addressed.

Very abbreviated rundown of the fun you are about to experience:

Step 1 - Process Flow Diagram
Step 2 - FMEA
Step 3 - Control Plan
Step 4 - Work Instructions
Step 5 - Gage Studies
Step 6 - Capability Studies
Step 7 - Statistical Process Control
Step 8 - Run @ Rate
Step 9 - PPAP

Welcome to our world in automotive. May the force be with you :bigwave:

That doesnt sound like what I would call "paperless":notme: ...
Again, what does your FMEA say? If your Recieving and shipping processes are so fool-proof as to not need running controls they may not need to be in the CP.

Are recieving and shipping potential sources of non-conformity?

I think youre missing the point here. The hierarchy is Process flow / CP / WI. The PF details stages of the process, the CP shows you where and what to test and the WI how.

...Whether your production needs this on a product or process basis only you can tell.

Hope this helps.

Sigh. For ISO cert no CP / PPAP / FMEA were needed. No one here has ever done them. I am the second of 2 people in our "Quality Dept". There is a process flowchart. There are Work Instructions. There are Procedures. If the Process Flow includes the design engineers, does that mean the CP has to include them too? Or is it just production?

I have no QMS background but tis my job to find out what we need for TS cert and "make it so".

I read somewhere in the forums that the CP needed to cover all processes from Dock to Dock and somewhere else that you need one for every product. I feel like the farther I go the behinder I get.

SOMETIMES you might find a helpful customer that is willing to train you on the process - especially if they are tiers (since that is part of their requirement to flow down the TS requirements).

Ask your STA nice..maybe you will get lucky!:tg:

Indeed. Its a TS thang.

No one here has ever done them. I am the second of 2 people in our "Quality Dept".
Get some training - Much will become clear. (quite a lot will become less clear and stay that way :tg: )

No and no. the CP needs to list all those control activities you need to implement due to unavoidable risks and weaknesses in your product and process. It fits somewhere between the flowchart and the WIs.

I have no QMS background but tis my job to find out what we need for TS cert and "make it so".
Training. You can get a long way with a generic manual and information on this site but it gets easier if you at least roughly knwo where you need to go.

I read somewhere in the forums that the CP needed to cover all processes from Dock to Dock and somewhere else that you need one for every product. I feel like the farther I go the behinder I get.
Depends. It needs to cover all processes that need controls and all products need to have a CP (which is different to saying a CP for each product - build families or have a generic CP for standardised processes).

Think of ISO as sledding down a 20 foot hill. Now think of TS16949 as jumping out of a helicopter and skiing down a mountain. It's like that.

I will suggest do what necessary and beneficial for your organization. the key is 'not to become a slave of the requirements" instead make it work for you.

If you have a detail WI, just fill the control plan with "reference to XXX-YY"

If you feel Control Plan can be used as quick and clear reference, just post your Control Plans and remove WI from your system.
