Control Plans - Evaluation Measurement Technique Column - Torque Control

#1
All,

Little bit of an open discussion, for ops where the correct application of the torque is required for a bolt say and we know this has to be of for example 15Nm +/- 0.1 Nm what are people opinion as to what should be in the Evaluation Measurment Technique column as well as the Control Method.

Some people think that the torque tool applying the torque is the first place is the evaluation and measurement item and the way this is controlled is by being in the calibration system, thus the freq and sample sizes are 100%

Other believe that a second seperate tool should be used to confirm that the original tool applied the correct torque and the freq and size is therefore reduced to the appropiate freq for example once per shift.

Thoughts? Comments?

Re: Control Plans - Torque Control

We have the torque guns hooked up to a package called 'Tool Talk' that tracks torque force and torque angle, so the primary control are the guns.

The calibration of guns we outsource based on historical gun reliability (number of hits). Others calibrate the guns in-house with a traceable force gage.

Re: Control Plans - Torque Control

In the dim distant past, control of torque was a prime concern on assembly lines I supported as production engineer.

The torque settings were in the range 0.3 - 0.6 Nm and we had a number of end-of-line test failures due to high variance at the 'torquing work-station'.

Our solution was dedicated torquing tools: originally one tool was used and adjusted to suit the product being produced. we introduced a suite of tools where each product had a dedicated torquing tool. We also carried out daily pre-use calibration checks.

these approaches saved the company a lot of stress on the lines where product frequently failed and a good deal of money (approx £11 000/day) so would appear to have been fairly effective.

Hope it helps
M
