Controlling Solidworks model, CAD & Gerber files

Just wondering how other companies are controlling Solidworks model, CAD or Gerber files used to create and release controlled drawings. Also how they are managed so that they are provided to the suppliers, if parts are outsourced. Are these files protected to prevent inadvertent modification?

Thanks in advance.

In software development there are programs designed to help with this exact problem. Here's two wikipedia links you might find helpful:

All our drawings that are sent to suppliers for outsourced material are printed and sent via paper or PDF via email. All are controlled.
I would not risk sending an actual Solidworks or other DWG type file to a supplier...

Thanks, Ted. In addition to giving our suppliers the PDF of the released drawings, we also provide the source files to assist with their programming.
