We decided to keep the old ISO 9001:1994 QPRO's because it covered the old and the new and we were comfortable with it. Are you saying we don't need second layer procedures?

Do a gap analysis. Many of my clients from the 1990's who 'upgraded' kept their old procedures, numbering and all. We just did a gap analysis and filled in a couple of 'blanks'.

What do you mean by 'second layer' procedures?

Also try this forum search. I used the search words +iso +9000 +transition and did an advanced search thread titles only. I got over 90 threads doing a simple search (searches all forums and looks in each thread) here using those search words.

I'm with Al. As long as you cover the requirements and you are comfortable with the current nomenclature... Why change it?

Rest assured that the auditor would have required it, had it been a std requirement. It's not, so he suggested it instead.

The interesting thing is that he said begin to change it... and why now? Speaking for myself, there are few remnants of the old 1994 version in our system today. In fact, little remains of the setup we had when we first got the ISO9001:2000 badge... The system keeps evolving regardless of the std versions. Could that be what the auditor is on about?

Some people drop the numbers altogether and just use the titles.

Suggested...the auditor suggested....I'm surprised no one's questioned the auditors actions. ;)

Added later: Whoops...I missed Claes's post.

That being said, if this was an opportunity for improvement provided by the auditor, I would analyze it based on what value it would provide to the organization by changing the numbering and terminology and the level of risk if you kept your documentation the way it is.

This is your company, your system, your culture. As long as all of the requirements are met, you're sitting pretty my friend. :)

Granted, a management system is to continually improve and if you have an upcoming document overhaul (or document spring cleaning as I call it), you may want to consider removing the numbers that are aligned with the standard...especially, if you ever decide to develop an integrated system (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, etc.).

But to "assist" your auditor, you may want to consider developing an Appendix or a document that shows how your numbering system aligns with the numbering system of ISO 9001:2000. That has greatly assisted all of our external auditors and our internal auditors when it comes time to prepare for audits.
