Cosmetic Specifications - Seeking good example of a cosmetic inspection standard

Hello all,

Before i submit my request, here's the story.
I have recently began working for a company who produce various metal enclosures. These enclosures are supplied in various finishes: Stainless Steel, Zinc anneal, power coated/painted steel etc.
I have now been asked to create a cosmetic acceptance specification (cosmetic inspection standard) that can be used by the operators to verify the power coated/painted finished parts they produce.
So my question is, does anyone have a good example of a cosmetic inspection standard that they wouldn't mind sharing with me?
In a previous life, i worked for a supplier to Sun Microsystems (who used a cosmetic acceptance specification supplied by Sun) but unfortunately i do not have a copy of it now.
Therefore, and guidance/examples would be appreciated in order that i can work out where to start!

Thanks in advance,

Kirkr99

Hello

I wonder how large your organization is kirkr99, and if the enclosures are also welded in one way or another.

As a wild guess, I would say it sounds like your company is making electrical boxes--I'm curious.

I ask more questions because a mid-size company making and finishing weldments as product is going to have a far different size and type of cosmetic standard as Harley-Davidson's or Sun Microsystems. One look at H-D's standard is kind of awe inspiring. They reference books on painting and describe the light and exposure of surfaces... wow

Perhaps you could tell us the experience of the operators and culture at the company, and someone could surely tell you some more specific things about wet paint/powdercoat... weld slag BB's... or something more specific to the type of product you're working on.

You probably know these already and are looking for a good structure.

I always liked the idea of having actual samples of product with good and borderline acceptable quality. You could back up the acceptability of something by a brief standard, such as defects per square foot. If such a thing were feasible in your quality system, it would be quick and very visual every day.
