Hi all,
We are just audited by a customer and he found that we did done internal audit on CQI-23, but there is no control point on the control plan regarding measurement of the part weight. My question is: Is part weight control a must met requirement under CQI-23 ?

Dennis,

I've had a look at my copy of CQI-23 and under item A6.15 in Process Table A - Injection Moulding it states "Part weight (if applicable)". also under item H1.8 in Process Table H - Part Inspection and Testing it states "General - Weight, Resin, Components, Porosity/Voids (if applicable)".

I would say it is not a "must" requirement unless you or your customer says so.

Hi Johnny,
In the injection molding table, yes, A6.15 is "Part weight (if applicable)". But at A7.1, there is no "if applicable" wording and the minimum requirement is "Start-up and once every 4 hours. For safety critical parts, start-up and once every hour". Does it mean it is a must to check weight with the specified freqency or we are violating the CQI-23 requirement ? What is your understanding on A7.1 ?

Also, ...
in Process Table H (Part inspection & test), H1.2 regarding appearance inspection, the minimum requirement is "First off by quality and 100% by operator". How can every molding factory check 100% on each part for appearance defect ?

Hello Dennis,

I"m sorry but my copy is at work and I don't have access to the new year but I think A7.1 moves to a new process. Does the title at the top change from Injection Moulding to something else?

I believe that is only applicable if there is an operator on the work station. If your process is automated then surely they cannot expect you to add an operator purely for visual inspection, especially if your process is so stable it's not required.

I'm terribly sorry but I was wrong in my answer; it doesn't move to a new process. I've been racking my brain on this and I can only assume for A6.15 they mean part weight (if applicable) may be monitored by the operator or machine? Or maybe it's an error and they mean "shot" weight instead?

As A7.1 is for QC procedures I would work with those requirements as a must for CQI-23. I'm sorry I've been confusing.
