Customer Audits and Guides

Thanks everyone!

Yes- I did say it all wrong. The potential customer is auditing us as the potential supplier...

Ok, so I'll let the VP go off on his own and say whatever he likes to the auditor. And you are all right that this could be a good thing - it will hopefully scare him enough to start working with me to get his dept's QMS pieces into place. Lordy knows my constant reminders aren't doing any good. I just wish that the customer had given us more warning so that I could have convened those dept's and said "hey guys we have two weeks to get your Stuff in order. This is not a drill. Repeat, this is not a drill". And maybe then they may have dashed around to do it since they are a reactive group always looking for the next emergency.

The downside is that if the audit goes well, the VP will breathe a sigh of relief and think that I've been pulling his leg all this time. And then nothing will get done.

I guess it could go either way...:bonk:

It's deja vu all over again!

Lucinda's situation sounds an awful lot like Firegirl's situation from a few weeks ago. I wonder if it will play out the same? I think Fire's company got lucky and at the last minute she helped cover for the irresponsible manager who was the thorn in her side. I think lots of folks chimed in that maybe the QM was off the mark in that her goals were not necessarily the correct ones. So, maybe Lucinda's customer will help her to see if she's all wet (no reference to her old avitar!) or the VP is. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. Do give us all the gory details, Lucinda. My money is on you, but we QM's may be a bit biased toward each other, too. Good luck!

I guess to me this seems simpler than it is. My position has always been you can audit anyone - whether for ISO, during a customer audit or whatever. The only requirement is that the person audited is audited about what their responsibilities are. So if the VP of whatever knows nothing about the quality system and if it is not his/her job to know about it (other than the part(s) which affect him/her) then it's no big deal.

I do believe in the guide principle, however I've never used it with respect to upper management. Personally I prefer to see them go down in flames if they don't know their job... I wouldn't want an auditor left alone with floor personnel, supervisors or most managers.

If the VP knows his/her job there shouldn't be an issue. Not to say it would hurt...

I'm a survivor

Survived my first audit by a customer. Not too bad. Some amazement on his part that it is taking us so long to move forward, but I think that I managed to show him that we have the basics in place. He was also surprised that I have so little "authority" - which was demonstrated a few times when he pointedly asked about whether I did such-and-such.

I told him that what his company wants is what our company wants and his report would be viewed positively as an opportunity for improvement.

We ended up chatting about things such as how the word 'quality' scares people and how some people have to be taught that there is no difference in a "quality" objective and a "business" objective! (one of your kinfolk, Jim?) --He's the one who brought up the subject so it was kind of strange....
After he left, I quickly scanned the Cove member list to see if he might be one of us-!

I have no idea what the VP said. It turns out that the man auditing him is somewhat of a "bud" so it probably doesn't matter.
Thanks to everyone for your support.
