here at our place we deal with profile extrusion in which a profile may have more that 10 dimensions, now can the cust. request all the demensions as critical characteristics and there for required to provide as many cpk's as there are dimensions??

The customer can always request anything. On the other hand, when you bid on the job, you have to plan accordingly and charge the customers in a way that you make a profit. You might have to educate the customer if they really want you to treat every dimension as a critical characteristic, there will be a cost impact, what normally triggers the customer to be more careful and serious about selection of critical characteristics.

Hi All,
I have been experiencing some challenges too with this topic lately. I found some good definitions in the following document:

Quality management systems -- Fundamentals and vocabulary


You may need to purchase this document from ISO but characteristics come in many forms, more than what is included on a print....

Once you have read the definition please let me know your thoughts. :read:

I think it means you should understand what your customer requirements, such as the specification for product, the documents form and so on!!! actually, for the special charascteristics, I think some customer notice it on the drawing or something, so it is easy to find it.

And also I think you should ask your customer to review your documents, so that you wont miss anything they want. LOL

The customer may designate certain characteristics as being more significant. You are also supposed to determine which characterisitics are significant (ref. 7.3.2.3).
