I have looked for other exact threads but cannot find any definitive answer.
I am currently in discussions
with others in our organisation over the need for customer notification under PPAP 3.1. We are ISO9001-not TS16949- and the customer has not imposed any CSR’s in this case except an instruction to the AIAG PPAP guide.
We supply to our Customer an Assembly for which We are design responsible and the assembly is built here using various internally manufactured and bought out sub-parts.
Original submission to the customer was on full assembly only with no sub-part details included beyond recognising source.
One of our suppliers has given advance notice of a proposed change in plant and process.
We are assured that there will be no impact on customer fit, form and function requirements and we would validate as per our original design criteria prior to introduction.
Now the problem arises from two apparently contradictory clarification interpretations from PPAP Table 3.1 to the opening statement Note- my understanding in italics.
Example 5 Clarification states “The organisation (Us) is responsible for approval of supplier (Our subcontractor) provided material and services. Obviously this clarification applies as we are the responsible party here, but does the clarification mean we do not need to notify the Customer?
and
Example 7 Clarification states “Any changes, including changes at the suppliers (Our subcontractor) to the organisation (Us) and their subcontractors (fourth tier?) that affect fit form, function performance and durability. Assuming we are content and validate such a change to our original design criteria, again does the clarification mean we do not need to notify the Customer?
I have always taken the view that we notify even when we change our socks, but others argue it’s not needed in this case.
I am not looking for the “safe” view here but for a definitive interpretation.
Thank you gladly anybody who can help me here.
