Customer Requests FAI on Tooling Fixture

Customer is requesting an FAI on tooling, while I understand FAIs on parts, I have zero experience on tooling FAI, what procedure am I following? How does the FAI from a production part differ from a tooling FAI? Do I still follow Forms 1, 2 & 3? Is the tool model considered the 'print' for nominal/tolerances and rejection criteria? What do I fill for form 2?

Interesting. Since the FAI is the documentation showing compliance to all the customer design and function requirements, I would think that you should start with the requirements the customer gives you for that tooling. It will be interesting to get others take but I would treat it just like a part, or better yet, a part of a part assembly since it will be incorporated into the part assembly at some point. If the customer has not given you the requirements, print or instructions I would get those first and then build the FAI from those documented requirements.

I would pay particular attention to sections 7.1.5.2.a Under Measurement Traceability to ensure that that the basis used for verification or validation is clearly documented and incorporate the tool into the process that is covered for 8.5.1.1 Control of equipment, tools and software, in your QMS.

All of this documentation and validation of the tool could then be used as your FAI documentation I would think.

Please let us all know how you finally ended up tackling this requirement.

A bit more, amplifying Randall's post above; many firms have a TAG or Tooling Analysis Group, or similar name. They serve as the go to team for customers vetting all things tooling, approvals, and cost increases for tooling life extensions and the like. If your customer has a similar entity suggest in addition to purchasing your contact....errrrr, reach out to them.

We make tooling and ground support equipment, and have recently been seeing requirements for FAI in our customer PO requirements. It makes no sense at all when you are making one of something, but whatever, they're the customer.

We've always had to provide a Tool Inspection Record, material certs, special process certs, sometimes functional testing results, like proof loading, and pictures. We revised our Tool Inspection Record form to have all of the stuff that the AS9102 Form 3 has, and put our CMM or Laser Tracker reports behind that. Then we complete Form 1, and put our normal Certificate of Conformance behind that. Then we complete Form 2, and put all of our material, special process and functional testing certs behind that. We basically put together our usual Tool Inspection Package, but use the AS9102 forms as cover pages for each part of the package, and provide ballooned drawings (which we normally do not have to provide).
