Customer Requirement for Certificate of Conformance (CoC)

Hi all,

I am new to the forum and have a question.
We have many customers that require a COCs for our product.
We have a supplier that wants to charge us for COC for the product we
receive from them. He is telling us we do not have to have the COCs on
our sight as long as they keep the COC on file at their facility. All I would
need to do I wright it in our manual this is our procedure. I would
appreciate any thoughts on this subject.

Are your customers requesting that you furnish a copy of the CoC from your Company? If so, provide one to them. The CoC is just a statement from your company saying the all the parts, and processes, meet the requirements of the PO/Contract.

My personal opinion on CoC...It is just a piece of paper, has no real value.

Ah, sorry I misread it. A little off-topic but I see more and more places charging for CoCs and other certs. I know of one large supplier that does it so they don't get tons of requests for paperwork, they charge a lot too.

Biggest non-value exercise around. A complete waste. No wonder some places charge for it. Tax on stupidity.

I would appreciate any thoughts on this subject.

CoC's can be used as a means to replace incoming inspection IF it can be relied upon, coming from a honest supplier who you have confidence in.

In the Aviation, Space & Defense Sector, the IAQG made available some guidance material on CoC and it is available in Section 5.2 of the Supply Chain Management Handbook. See attached one document available at that location.

As for your supplier requesting a fee to issue the CoC, I personally think it is preposterous. They are expected to ship ONLY conforming product. What is the big deal for them to issue a formal paper to that effect?

The question is: do you trust the process they have in place to assure confidence in that CoC? If you do, great. If you don't, then it is a waste of time and energy. But, if you don't trust a supplier, you have much bigger problems than a CoC.

Many outfits simply have a piece of default text in their packing slip that says " CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMANCE: we delivered everything in accordance with your purchase order requirements".

We receive a CoC with every shipment we receive (electronically once everything has been inspected and been shipped), however we have also started receiving requests from end users for a Certificate of Analysis (for a particular batch # no less), which is something altogether different.

Certificate of Analysis is an important part of the documentation.

But the standard CoC stating that the parts meet Contract/PO requirements is a different issue and is just another unnecessary piece of paper, in my opinion. However, if the customer wants it, provide it.
