Anyone have customers requiring C-TPAT (Customs Trade Partership Against Terrorism) Certification. We have a customer telling us they require the certification, however, we dont take anything over the border. We are a transportation company and load units - some for other carriers who do go to Mexico and Canada, however, we dont go oursevles. Not sure if any of you are familiar with the DOT required HM 232 Hazardous Transportation Security requirements but we are compliant to it, and it appears to be a domestic version of the C-PAT - deal with mostly the same issues..anyone?

Wierd. I'm sure I responded to this already...

The issue is a continuity one...While you don't cross the border, you do handle the products that another trucker carries. You have access to the trucks and the products and thus, have a responsibility for maintaining security seals, doing 7 point inspections of the trailers you're loading, checking the backgrounds of anyone who you hire, and ensuring that manifests and Bills of Lading are correct. These are all C-TPAT issues.

Having said that, my company does not require certifications from all our suppiers. We require a security program be in place, and if it is not a C-TPAT certified program, then it needs to be reviewed and approved by our VP of Procurement.

Try suggesting that alternative to your customer.

Thanks Rosie - this is exactly what I was after. We have a security (HM 232) program in place due to the fact we deal with Hazardous Materials - Looks like it encompasses the majority of the requirements. Thank you so much for your response.

Happy to help...with new programs like C-TPAT, there's always a lot of gray areas at first.
